PT form *qāz/qāŕ or *ɣāz/ɣāŕ. Possibly an early borrowing from Indo-European (PIE *ǵʰh₂éns), which could explain why Uyghur, Uzbek, and Ili Turki have voiced /ɣ/ instead of expected /q/. Source language is not clear as IE languages of the region typically exhibit /ĵ/ (Iranian) or /ś/ (Tocharian) as a reflex of PIE *ǵʰ.
