PT form unclear.

Forms like qaplan may be compounds related to yï-lan "snake", ars-lan "lion", sïrt-lan "hyena", although it is difficult to parse these.

Forms like babr are ultimately from Arabic بَبْر, although it is unclear how this form made its way into Sakha.

Forms like bar(s) (often compounded with yol- "road, way") are intriguing. These are cognate with Mongolian бар/ᠪᠠᠷᠰ. It is tempting to connect these with Ancient Greek πάρδαλις (c.f. Latin pardus). Scythian is the most likely connection between Turkic and Greek, although it is fairly poorly known. Other Iranian languages have forms like päläŋ, which exhibits a shift from /r/ to /l/, plus additional phonetic material at the end of the word. Further research is needed.
